AlphaPiano's MPiano

Post by Piet De Ridder »

Not yet available (sometime later this year, it is rumoured): the MPiano from Alpha Pianos.

"MPiano is a touch-sensitive keyboard with adjustable key characteristics, a keyboard revolution in an elegant design.
The “M” stands for mechatronic piano. Beneath each key is high technology in the form of adjustable actuators that make the resistance and thereby the perceived weight of the keys adjustable. Moreover, the surfaces of the individual keys are touch-sensitive and can thereby be used as a controller. In our model ACTOR, the long sought-after desire of many musicians has been fulfilled: having an instrument for many different areas of application.
A world of undreamt of possibilities is open to artists. ACTOR allows the playing feel of a concert grand piano, a church organ, synthesizers or styles of one’s own creation to be experienced and felt. Unlimited possibilities, adjustable via the ACTOR app for tablets."

Would it be too much to ask for some CC faders/knobs? Does look nice though, and an adjustable weighting of the keys sounds interesting.

The lack of even a modwheel or pitch bend rather makes a mockery of dual purpose, doesn't it? Personally I'm more concerned about the $5m of architect and builder fees I'd have to pay to get a place worthy enough to put it in.

Total guess, but could it be that some of those keys could be assigned to act as faders and/or controllers?

That's always a bad solution even if so, isn't it? Certainly for wheel action you need... well, wheels. It's a reason why I'm put off the NI Kontrol series that is has those horrible strips.

By this point, there's probably a market for a small robust high quality unit that is just a couple of wheels. So many manufacturers seem to screw up with this.

Along with looking really unique, it also has a lot of great features like controllable action.

Not at all attracted by this instrument, I must say... looks cold and hi-tech, not my kind. We'll see what it's capable of, though, even though I suspect sending cc data with a wheel will always be more precise and efficient. It seems that if you assign cc to finger scrolling anytime you put a finger on a key it will send unpredictable cc values, but who knows

Wow, Rob, that may be the first time I have seen the description "hi-tech" used as a negative esthetic :)

haha true, but that's my taste... my wife, architect, has tried to educate me to appreciate the stylish looks of many things, but she failed miserably :)
