SonicCouture "MoonKits" / brushed drums

A pretty sophisticated new offering from SonicCouture: the MoonKits. (Use the words ‘drumkit’ and ‘Moon’ in the same sentence and you’d be forgiven for thinking of someone entirely different than a drummer stirring and swishing about with brushes, but anyway. It is what it is.)

Not only does MoonKits include a broad range of different drums, recorded with an intelligently chosen range of microphones — which all have a dramatic impact on the sound, unlike the 70.000 or so mics they set up for orchestral sampling these days —, the recordings themselves appear to have been meticulously edited and organized into a very versatile, playable and at times jawdroppingly convincing collection of single hits and sync-able looped performances.
(This is what I always felt StraightAhead JazzDrums should have been developed into, but never was. But SonicCouture’s focus is not just jazz, in fact, judging by the demo’s, they seem to be at least as interested in offering totally believable brush solutions for non-jazz stylings.)

This being a SonicCouture product, saying that the sound quality is excellent is somewhat superfluous of course. The detail is remarkable. (And according to the video below, some of the patches have 100 different velocity layers.)

I haven’t bought this yet, but I know I won’t be able to resist for much longer.

Very informative overview video:

I can easily say this is a instrument I don’t have. I have some brushes with AD, but I’ve never found them very useful. Certainly going to take a hard long look at this. Very excited. I was just needing some brushes the other day. Thanks Piet.
