Prerformance Samples 90's brass!

Post by X-bassist »

Edit: And right on cue! (see my comment below) Performance Samples is indeed coming out with a trumpet lib that is very much like CInesamples 90's brass! I never thought he would be so ahead of the game! :) So cool.... though a rough alpha for now...I'm sure it will be more reasonablly priced (or a sale will bring it down).

The Cinesamples sale (up to 25% off) has been extended until Friday Oct. 19th. I'm considering 90s Retro Trumpets at $149 but have 3 misgivings:

1) $149 for one instrument section is a bit steep for me (esp considering Retro Horns is next, a bundle sale can't be more than a year or two off)
2) The absence of close mics and real round robin shorts.
3) The interface design - from an $18 instrument, sure, but at 10 times the price? How did the classy Cinesamples interface fall so far (IMHO since Tina Guo- I guess I just like mic choices. ;)

Also, with an amazing sale on Oceania (which I didn't know I would like soo much), it seems like getting the "Fast legato" and "Normal Legato" patches into one patch should not be that hard. OT regularly puts 3 legato speeds into their patches, you play faster, you get a faster legato. What's up Cinesamples?

If anyone owns this and can speak to the playability I'd appreciate it. :)

Editing extra mics is a pain, and getting the legatos into one patch takes some fancy scripting. But if one small company can give me a choir for $99, it seems like 90's retro trumpets could be so much more, especially considering the quality of the samples. Let's just hope some smart engineer snuck some close mics into the recordings and can edit them in as well (ah, again, Oceania also has close and far mics, *sigh*).

I thought this was going to be a hard decision, but I just realized Performance Samples has talked me out of it. They should do a 90's Caspian Brass. ;)

I do like the sound of Retro Trumpets very much. The UI - and indeed the name - feels like a really bad decision, but that ultimately doesn't matter much to me in practice. Agreed on a combined legato patch though.

Maybe they'll 1.1 this next year with an adaptive legato patch (and likely quietly ditch the insane UI). Any which way, it currently doesn't quite reach trigger level at the current price for me either.

I admit I don't pay a lot of attention to UI artwork, I'm far more concerned with functionality... that said, what's the problem with the GUI?

The sale is advertised as "up to" 25% off, not 30. They used to do 40% discounts, and these days there are more competitors, not less. What's up with that? My guess is that they've extended it because it hasn't generated the interest and revenue they'd hoped for.

The only two Cinesamples products I have are Tina Gua Legato and Hollywoodwinds, both bought at 40% discount. I can't say what is "too expensive" and what is not, but they are too expensive for me unless the price is much more substantially reduced.

Fixed. I just noticed from my email it was 25%. It would need to be half price for me to bite, but maybe when 90’s retro horns comes out I can scoop up both at a better price. Or when 90’s trombones hit. ;)

As far as the GUI, it looks like a temp first pass, hopefully they can inject it with some design and style, but yeah, it’s not a deal breaker. Just seems like someone there is asleep at the wheel. Perhaps a slicker design and changing the name to 90’s Melody Trumpets would be better. ;)

Time + Space sent an additional 20% off coupon along to me on the weekend so, coupled with the Cinesamples sale price, I ended getting Retro Trumpets for about $117 US. That sounds good until it's converted to ca. $150 CAN. :) I do feel even that is a bit high, BUT I do like the library, have no problems with the GUI, and the samples sound great. Right now I'm combining the trumpet(s) with Spitfire Brass and have discovered they can work together (with a little tweaking) and balancing. As a solo instrument, the trumpet has quite a different flavour than other trumpets I have...certainly less harsh and raspy, so overall I feel this a welcome addition to my collection of instruments.

PS: Time + Space also said today that "Use your unique code multiple times and remember, you'll earn loyalty points on any purchases for extra savings in the future!". So it looks as if the discount for Loyal Customers is worth retianing if there other things I wish to buy as well. This promo only lasts another 24 hours though.
