just a random thought today, as I loaded the Meldway grand to try a few themes. Sounds good and very playable to me. A search in the forum yelded no results, so I was wondering what the reason can be... I've added a little impro on a S. Swallow piece, also with midi if someone feels like trying with their own piano (I'd like to hear the vintage D as an example)

Re: Meldway anyone?
Pretty authentic modern Hamburg Steinway tone, with a lot of mic positions and sound shaping options. The weaker side is it doesn't offer many dynamics layers or sympathetic resonance.
The installation process is horrible and it takes a lot of space (40gb if I recall correctly). I have got so many Steinway options so this ultimately gets deleted. But it's definitely a good one if you don't have 15 other Steinway D pianos.

can't say for the dynamic layers, but the resonance not only is definitely there, but judging by the sample size I'd say it's the greatest part of the sound.locture wrote: ↑Aug 04, 2025 11:04 am Pretty authentic modern Hamburg Steinway tone, with a lot of mic positions and sound shaping options. As an example, the Neumann Head regular samples weight is 2.064MB, the Neumann Head resonance samples 4.253MB

To clarify, Meldway has good pedal-down resonance samples, but no sympathetic resonance available. Hold C4 silently and strike a C5 staccato, you don't hear the C4 strings ring.RobS wrote: ↑Aug 04, 2025 1:25 pmcan't say for the dynamic layers, but the resonance not only is definitely there, but judging by the sample size I'd say it's the greatest part of the sound.locture wrote: ↑Aug 04, 2025 11:04 am Pretty authentic modern Hamburg Steinway tone, with a lot of mic positions and sound shaping options. Re: Meldway anyone?
many thanks Piet for the Vintage D version! I tell you, if the tone of the Vintage D piano is superior, I find the phrasing, legato and staccato and accents more to my liking in the Melda piano. Of course as it always happen when you apply a midi recording done with a different instrument to a new one, it doesn't translate 100% but it's a valuable proof for me, I think for this kind of pieces the Melda is fine.

I liked the Meldway demos and bought the package quite a while ago, but then had problem after problem with installation and put it on the back burner. I’m traveling now but thanks for the reminder, I really ought to reach out to the company when I get back.

Larry if you’re reinstalling it, be sure to put it on a ssd, I had all sorts of problems when it was on a mechanical drive… now it works great

Thanks Rob.
Actually, the only spinning drive I have left is a huge 20 TB drive that I’ve recently bought to use for backing up all the drives I have hooked up. I suppose I’m going to have to buy a backup for the backup. It never ends.
