Reverside Reverb - Free for owners of 2CAudio plugins

Post by Duncan Krummel »

Denis Malygin, a co-founder and developer of 2CAudio before their falling out, has built a new reverb plugin called Reverside. It’s in open beta right now, and Denis says he’ll offer free licenses to all 2CAudio customers (once released, and after providing receipts or serial #s). He made a couple of posts on Gearspace, so I’ll let his own words do most of the speaking:

“Over past 3 years I've been working on my new plug-in engine and a new reverb called Reverside. All 2CAudio customers are eligible for a free license and could try a preview version. This reverb is a way more sophisticated and capable, apart from super-clean natural reverbs it can do unique spatial effects and even some form of sound positioning in a virtual room.

Unlike old 2C plug-ins Reverside runs natively on ARM Mac systems, DSP is not optimized at the moment though once done it will use ARM CPU's vector instructions at full.

All those who followed me on kvr have had access to beta versions for over a year now.

You can find more information about REVERSIDE at:
https://devproaudio.com

I thank all those 2CAudio customers who have been supporting me over past 3 years with warm words and donations. Without that, Reverside could not come to existence.”

I’ve been testing the beta version for a couple of days, comparing it against my current workhorse, Cinematic Rooms Pro, and I’m enjoying it. The presets all have a bit of a silvery sheen to it that is too bright and reflective for me, but I’ve worked out a generic hall preset I’m quite fond of. I’ll post a few examples here later, after I’ve had my morning coffee and dropped my partner off at work.

Oh, very interesting this. Thanks for posting, Duncan. I was not in the loop (nor do I own any prior products) after the infamous falling out, so this is a positive piece of news. Would be lovely to hear it in action.

Also thanks for me. I was/am very fond of their reverbs and spatial plugins, but decided to remove them mostly from my workspace due to their internal drama and likely no update/support.

Sorry for the delay folks, I thought it probably best for me to check with Denis first before posting demos of a beta. I will say there are some bugs to work out, and it's currently extremely resource heavy (one instance uses over 40% of the cpu on my M1 Ultra Mac), but the sound can be very transparent while still giving a great sense of space. I've made some comparisons between Reverside, CRP, and Spaces II. If I get the go ahead, I'm happy to share those here. Of course, it's an open beta, so you can join and test for yourself as well.

Hello guys,

Duncan thank you for posting here and letting people know about Reverside.

The CPU usage is heavy now for two reasons:
1) the DSP alg is not vectorized yet. I'm going to do that this summer. it shall make it 3-5X faster
2) the alg itself is pretty complex and due to modular design cpu usage can vary significantly from preset to preset

Reverside is a modular, sophisticated and complex reverb plug-in.
The amount of parameters to control is on a scale of a typical synth plug-in,
you can have a look at the manual:
https://devproaudio.com/manual.html

anyone interested in betatesting could simply email me at: info@devproaudio.com

Reverside is free for all 2CAudio and SpinAudio users.

and I'd be happy to answer any questions about Reverside.

Regards,
Denis

Hey Denis,

Is an Intel i9 (2019 iMac) too underpowered to run Reverside?

Thanks,
Larry

currently the following platform/formats are supported:

1) VST3/CLAP on PC/Windows
2) VST3/CLAP/AudioUnit(auv2) on ARM Based Macs

intel based macs are not currently supported. I might do it later.

Thanks for the go-ahead and additional information, Denis! Here are some files I made as part of my own experiments with the reverb. Reverside is, as mentioned, really quite detailed. I don't have anywhere close to a full understanding of it yet, but I did workout a preset I'm quite fond of. I'm typically looking for as transparent an extension of the room that I can. To that end, and because I really like comparisons when evaluating something like reverb, here is a link with some examples I put together, comparing Reverside with CRP (London Hall) and Spaces II (Northwestern Hall). I picked those two as alternatives, and those particular patches, because they're nearly always the other options I go with.

https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/foodawp0 ... vo8l3&dl=0

With Reverside and CRP, I put the mix squarely at 50%, which is far more than I normally would, so you can clearly hear the effect. With that said, I'm actually quite impressed with how much Reverside doesn't obscure the source. Both CRP and Reverside have the same reverb time, as well, so that should speak to the clarity. If anyone would like to hear something specific, I'm happy to oblige as time permits. Also, this was only testing the preset I made. I'll try to add some files showing different stock presets as I continue to work with it.

Thanks Duncan. Varied examples and music! Are CRP and Reverside using a different decay time here? I'm generally liking the vibe produced by the latter, but its size and length sound distinctly different to me. Closer to a stage sound than a Hall. Definitely not obscuring the source.

REVERSIDE new build is available.

CHANGES IN 0.9.3.b300:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
- Fixed: Wet/Dry Mix settings are not loaded properly from project state
- Fixed: Incorrect Wet/Dry Gains values displayed after loading preset
- Fixed: Sometimes after switching presets the plug-in controls become
irresponsive until one switches to another view page
- Fixed: ER/LR routing issue reported by Michael Seipel
- ER/LR gain pair is now augmented with respective ER/LR Balance/Gain
- ER/LR/WET/DRY gain ranges increased
- various other minor improvements and fixes

Now one can control mixing gains in two ways both for a Wet/Dry and ER/LR pairs:
A) as absolute gains in dB
B) as a mix/balance in percents and residual gain
the conversion between A and B representations is automatic and all 4 values are visible at once.

Luke, no they are actually both set to right around 1.73s. I did upload a simple snare example to the folder, where you can hear that the decay times are actually quite similar, but the bloom in CRP is much more significant. I also included a Reverside Longer example of the snare where the RT60 is increased to just over 4s long, which is closer in feel to CRP.

Thanks Duncan, nice music too… the reverb sounds very clean but to me it’s so different that it’s hard to compare with the others. Sounds dry-ish in general
