Reverb tricks

Post by Guy Rowland »

Does anyone know of any reverbs (and delays for that matter) with kill switches? Something automatable that resets the tail. Case use - a slow attack pulse with reverb and delay but the reverb and delay cut with the abrupt end of the pulse, and grow clean again on the next pulse.

It's made me wonder if there's a bit of gap in the market for a reverb that can perform LFO tricks - not just a reverb with an LFO slapped on it which you could do in other ways, but being built-in can do stuff like this that is unique.

You can do this easily with Infiltrator by Devious Machines!

My guess is that you will pick it up. It is a monster and sounds unlike anything else. The possibilities are many and the sound is really good. They could easily charge half the price of the plugin for some of their modules sold separately. Really good value for what it does, especially on sale!

I believe Blackhole has a Kill Switch as well. Not sure if it's exactly what you're after though. Neat idea about the pulse thing. If you get it to sounds as you intended, please do post your results, very curious.

Does sound tempting Tanuj, it looks like endless possibilities.

Ah yes thanks Luke, I knew I'd seen it somewhere! However it doesn't seem to do what I want - it stops anything new going in, but it doesn't kill the reverb engine itself.

Someone on KVR tipped me off that Avenger has two internal effects with this very thing though - AA Reverb and Delay both have a Kill Feedback switch. I can modulate it with Mod Envelope - job done!

Except the results are rather underwhelming. First 4 chords here are clean. 2nd 4 chords turn the AA Reverb to 100% wet, and the Delay to 90% wet, killed on note release. When gain-matched, it is hard to discern much change - I almost wondered if it was in circuit at all, but keeping the chords held drowns everything all when the amp envelope hits the sustain / release, both set to zero. So it's working alright, it does make it a little smoother, but it's not as mind-expanding as I'd hoped...

Oh, that sounds a bit underwhelming... sorry. I thought it was grand idea.

Could the new cubase 14 modulators do the trick? (Haven’t bought the update yet)

I don't think so, because the issue is with the functionality of the reverb more than the control side.

But there are options. I don't think Aurora kills feedback, but ShapeBox3 might. I'll be watching that Devious Machines one as a swiss army knife with a bazillion tricks.

That said, my tests were so underwhelming, my original specific purpose I'm not so interested in any more, it's just the notion that we could make these gadgets do far more clever things than emulating some rusty hardware from 1968.

I don't remember the name of the plugin, but I know that Zynaptiq has a Reverb tool on their page.
