Satechi NVMe 40Gbps enclosure

Post by GR Baumann »

IN case anyone is looking for en external enclosure, The Satechi is excellent, w/r speed around 3.1 GB/s on TB4 with a WD SN850x, no thermal throttling, I transferred 1.5 TB for a test and transfer speed was consistent.

There is a problem with idle temperatures in my view. I had 53-55 degrees celsius. The enclosure comes with a polycarbonate cover that clips onto it and is supposed the dissipate heat. I did as advised but consider the 55 too high in idle state.

Solution was easy, I removed the plastic and placed the enclosure on a aluminium mousepad, now it does not exceed 44 degrees anymore. A aluminium heatsink with fins on top of the Satechi perhaps will get it another 3-4 degrees down, I just ordered one to try out.

Apart from that, it is tool free and with the right blade works very well. Picked it up for 80 euros.

It is connected to my Mac's TB4. With only two available, I got a Caldigit TB4 Element hub, who had everything I really needed.
