Exponential Audio's new R4

Post by Piet De Ridder »

March 10 will see the release of a new addition to the range of reverb plug-ins from Exponential Audio, the R4, a so-called character reverb which not only “outdoes all the classics” but also “combines the past, the present and the future in powerful ways”. Bold words.

Features:
  • 6 selectable types of EQ for input, early reflection, and reverb tail.
  • Early and tail EQ can be dynamically modulated.Whether a subtle pulsation or sweeping notch, modulated EQ is a powerful new weapon in the producer's toolkit.
  • R4 retains the Chorused Hall of earlier Exponential Audio plugins. And it adds a second Hall with density modulation that adds motion to the tail without adding pitch change. Of course, you can add pitch modulation on top if you want it. These halls are the perfect solution for sparse or sterile mixes and solos.
  • There's also a Plate and Chamber; updated from R2.
  • Warp section with compressor/expander and overdrive.
  • Pre-delay and reverb delay now adjustable by tempo.
  • Tail suppression circuit for more dynamic response.
  • Freeze button. Click the button, and the contents of the reverb go into an infinite mode that goes on as long as you like.
  • Gated reverb effects.
  • Over 1200 presets.
  • Helpful tool-tips to guide new users.
Price:
$299 / €289 with special pricing for existing Exponential Audio customers.
A free 21-day trial will be available too.

Didn't enjoy R2 demo - couldn't here how special it was compared to other offers - but liked Nimbus.

I absolutely love Numbus, and Excalibur, and had no qualms about purchasing either one. I demo'd R2 and PhoenixVerb, and while I liked them, I didn't, however, that I could justify the costs. I will demo R4 as well, and as much as I'd love to love it, I reserve judgement until I have it in my studio. I do applaud Mr. Carnes for allowing us to use trial versions. It does make a difference.

Aside - while I find myself tweaking endlessly, sometimes I wish there were fewer controls<G>!

It should have just been a paid upgrade from Nimbus. Too many kinda similar 'verbs these days.

I like Nimbus and in the video it says that this is mainly Nimbus controls with a 'vintage' sound. C'mon, does it really make that much difference? I have all the Exponential products but this time around I'll need to be really impressed in order to purchase.

... but I believe if you have more than one EA products already you can apply for a special upgrade price. Just saying, no idea how that would be.

I did not spring for R2 or Phoenix, but I remember that I was quite impressed with the fact that they really did sound different.

Phoenixverb is the neutral version, R2 is the more character version.

Nimbus is the successor (??) to Phoenixverb. And I liked Nimbus better than Phoenixverb, although who knows, maybe it was just my mood for the day?

And now R4 is successor to R2? What does that really mean? All the extra controls and the same sound of R2? Seems to me that's probably the case. I will definitely be giving it a listen!

@Jack : asI understand it, "vintage" goes for moving tails, espacially with a wobbling element in it, and chorus. It does make a difference, I think but as I said, I haven't been convinced by this R2 compared to some other offerings and for the price.

The R4 is a refined version of the R2, incorporating the newer features Michael has added to his other products. It certainly has a beautiful sound to it.

yep , beautifully sounding indeed. demoing it since yesternite. More impressed than I was with R2. Don't know why since it's the same engine.

Hi,

Although I qualify to get R4 for half the price, (since I have other EA Products). I decided to pass on it.

Basically, I don't think it offer something I really need at this point. I already have EA's (R2, PhoenixVerb, Nimbus). Which offer a lot already, at least for my needs. Maybe their next release will be more interesting for me.

Cheers,
