The Unfinished / Omnisphere Ferox
.
Omnisphere Ferox is a collection of 300 patches for Spectrasonics Omnisphere 2, inspired by the cinematic work by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and featuring an eclectic blend of analogue, hybrid acoustic, dark and distorted textures, rhythms, sequences and atmospheres. A brooding, eerie, shadowy, noisy, swarming soundset designed to get under your skin.
Omnisphere Ferox is full of lo-fi drumloops, ghostly mallets, crumbling analogue synth riffs, drifting modular leads, haunted pianos, warm synth pads, damaged acoustic basses, gritty basses, disturbing ambience, fractured strings, odd synth noises, broken retro machines, melancholy soundscapes and curious hybrid instruments.
With 300 patches, there is a huge amount of sonic flexibility within Ferox and a variety of musical applications on offer. Not just the Reznor/Ross sound, this soundset is also great for horror, ambient, even music with a folksy touch, due its subtle nods towards Nordic and Western sounds. Go all out with just the analogue synth sounds, or keep it real with the hybrid acoustic elements.
As ever, this release features intricately configured and useful programming on the modwheel, to bring extra life and dynamism to the sounds.

Re: The Unfinished / Omnisphere Ferox
Ha, you just beat me to it. I've been listening to the walkthrough, which I don't normally do as I just buy knowing it'll be great. Guess what? It's great. I have little need of more of this, but what can you do - it's best in class.
Not sure if it's actually out yet, mind - couldn't find it in the Unfinished shop, and can't find it in a newsletter. Matt?!

...and bought. Of course. Will play later - I'll need the break from boring mastering chores.
So Mr Matt... what would you say the future chances of a Scandanavian-infused electronica bank are? (I added to the word "Scandanavian" in a blatant attempt to pique your interest...)

It all rather depends on what you mean when you say "electronica". It's a hugely wide field. What did you have in mind?

Fingers crossed and hoping he's not thinking of Aqua or Ace of Base...

128 Aqua Greatest Hits!
No, you know - the I Break Horses stuff - or maybe Sigor Ros (Icelandic I know). So less cinematic, lots of analogue joy, but still moody enough to fit into the Unfinished vibe?
EDIT - but if it strayed a little into other contemporary electronica.... perhaps halfway towards Chvrches but no more.... that might be a lovely thing?

Re: The Unfinished / Omnisphere Ferox
I'm so with you on Horse Shoes, Matt.
Does anybody else think Matt is making the Omnisphere factory stuff look just a tiiiiny bit ho-hum? Apart from The Unfinished factory stuff, that is. And for the love of God, all my whining and complaining notwithstanding, Spectrasonics really do have to bring back a Hybrid category don't they? That's the single most inexplicable change from Omni 1 to Omni 2... and that's with some stiff competition....

Re: The Unfinished / Omnisphere Ferox
The former is always possible, as it's a sound I like to employ myself. Whether I'd do enough to justify a whole soundset... dunno.Guy Rowland wrote:No, you know - the I Break Horses stuff - or maybe Sigor Ros (Icelandic I know). To a certain extent there's some material in Ferox that suits the mood, if you check out my demo track below for example. There's certainly a good few drifty analogue basses and pads as well.
Re: The Unfinished / Omnisphere Ferox
Beautiful demo, Matt!
Sometimes my inner voice tells me to stop buying more and more sound patches. Then comes another Unfinished sound set which drowns out my inner voice...

Re: The Unfinished / Omnisphere Ferox
Yeah, that's a gorgeous track Matt.
Well, put the idea of something skewed a shade more towards the (scandi)electronica for Omni on the ideas shelf perhaps. Feels like there's loads of cinematic and a lot of sub-par EDM for Omni, but with so many great analogue sources from classic synths, for example, I think there's a whole lot of scope to explore slightly different territory. This is a great set though, make no mistake and plenty that can be used for non-cinematic stuff across all your stuff.
I do hope Spectrasonics come good with a way to search multiple libraries at once. I've just had a look... I now have a shade under 2,000 Unfinished Omni patches :-)
