Cubase has audio delay

Hi, I'm setting up my studio which has a variety of external synthesizer instruments that I'd like to incorporate into my setup.
I have a few E-RM Multiclocks that run fine when in use. The problem occurs when Multiclocks is not running and I send midi from Cubase to an external instrument and the audio delay/response time is uneven.
I tried adjusting Midi and both external instruments and midi to create sounds but it didn't work. Does anyone know why there is such a sound delay? Thank.
