GForce Oberheim DMX

The above serves not only as an intro to this new software version but a cute micro documentary on the history of the iconic 80s 8-bit sampled drum machine that gave the world Blue Monday, Rockit and The Message.

This is an official Oberheim-branded version containing every EEPROM variation of this and related machines, an accurate 8 bit pitch shifter and adds several tricks of its own with on board effects. What it doesn't have is an on-board sequencer, but does have 70 midi files.

Even so. I gotta ton of DMX samples, why get this? Cos it's £19.99 +VAT intro that's why. That's daft enough to sway me, BUT... no multi-out. A bizarre omission.

Apparently, multi-outs are on the feature request list at GForce; but the stereo-only current configuration isn’t enough of a problem to stop me from buying, particularly at the current price. GForce + Oberheim is an irresistible combination.

Best,

Geoff

Do you need that white Don Johnson Jacket when performing? .)

I'd read that, but being on a feature request list (hey, I can make those) is different from an "it's coming" list. It's just part of my workflow for drums, I always route the kick separately so I can run sidechains where and when I need to, everything routed ready to go in the template. Given I already have this with Battery and XO with DMX samples, it seems a little bizarre to take a backwards step.

Hopefully the feature really will appear down the road, then I can look again.

I don’t understand why they didn’t include a sequencer. So it’s more like a tweakable sampler than a proper virtual drum machine. How retro that is… :/ Sequencer are here for happy accidents, at least for me.

I had fun with Cherry Audio CR78 during the demo period.

I should look into Psychic Modulation Pulsecode, I remember it being fun too.

That makes sense, Guy. In my case, I often use multiple drum sources; so I rarely need more than stereo out, because the kick may come from Battery, the snare may be from XO, the hats from Triaz, etc. Even so, I appreciate more options because they may be useful when I decide to go a different way.

In the meantime, it’s true that we can’t count on any features other than those that exist today; but adding multiple outs to an "it's coming" list would be a promising development.

Best,

Geoff

depending on how resource hungry this turns out to be I can imagine using multiple instances to get separate outputs, not exactly the same, but close.

I'm also not terribly bothered by the lack of a built in sequencer - I have a DAW for that. In candor, the reason my DrumTracks still has a place in my studio is the the buttons and the sequencer. Sometimes that is just what I need.

However, it is the DrumTracks sounds that got my attention! While I do have the hardware, it requires maintenance, such as replacing that dang (scarce) filter chip from time to time.

Battery gets me close, but I've yet to find a really good sample set - and I even dumped the original eeproms - but without their filters it doesn't sound the same.

I've downloaded the demo, but I expect that to be somewhat a waste of time :)
