It’s official, folks:

http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/FAQ/ ... tement-faq

Having doubled the cost of the regular Pro Tools annual support plan in the summer to $199, Avid have now made it paying it mandatory. If you decide to skip a year’s update, your license now becomes forever frozen on whatever the last version you have was. Your only options are to pay full price, or go to subscription. This applies to both regular and Ultimate Pro Tools.

What an awful company Avid are.

I am amazed that anyone is actually surprised by this.

I've just let my Sibelius support lapse and moved fully over to Dorico. No more Avid for me.

Call me a sap, I actually WAS surprised. I thought it was rubicon they'd be just too bloody stupid to cross - they hinted at it in the summer but backed off. As it was they were being vile charging over double to reinstate, which is worse than anyone else. To stop it completely was essentially waving a big sign saying "HEY EVERYONE, BETTER GET USED TO ANOTHER DAW NOW".

Audio post is locked in pretty much to PT, though I suspect Nuendo might make some slow inroads in some places - I understand its quite popular elsewhere in Europe. But I find it hard to believe it will remain as dominant as its managed to do in music studios. Every up and coming producer will be using something else.

I think they are trying to emulate Quark Xpres.

In the DTP world it was THE application, and everyone used it and everyone needed it. Then they got really complacent.

I know one company who had all legitimate licences for every seat, but used cracked copies because the copy protection was so twitchy.

The problem for Avid will be that by the time they realise what they have done, it will be too late to fix it.
