Since there’s few features added in K8 that I care about, only speed and reliability, is there an argument to be made for deleting K7, and using the free K8 player for compatible libraries while using K6, which is faster than K7, for the others?

Deleting K7 or any previous version would of course be up each user to decide for him/herself, but I suggest there are arguments concerning whether or not one should upgrade to the full version of K8. Personally, I’m finding it to be an improvement on K7 and, the nice $129 CAN voucher provided after I upgraded was, in my opinion, a much appreciated gesture by NI. It allowed me to end up with a totally free NI instrument as well as K8…for what I considered to be a reasonable upgrade price for K8 alone. And, overall, it eliminates the need to consider trying to cope with the disadvantages of attempting to get by with the player version. I do understand template concerns that many have, but I can’t say it’s an issue for me.

Yes, the £89 voucher was a welcome surprise. You can only use it for non-discounted Komplete products (ie nothing from NI developers like 10 Phantom Rooms whose products aren't bundled with Komplete). I went for Session Percussionist which had bee widely raved about, and with good reason - it's an exceptionally well conceived and executed product.

You're a Mac guy so the performance won't be much different. But if you are curious about the new browser etc and you don't use K7 in VE Pro, your plan should work fine.

I decide to bite the bullet and just buy Kontakt 8. It seems fine.

Anyway to tell it to always use Classic View for the Library tab? I hate the new look.

Jay, not sure this still works in K8, but it certainly did work in previous versions: set Kontakt up visually the way you like, and then, from Logic's plug-in menu, do 'Save As Default'. That always loads Kontakt just as you configured it.

(Maybe K8 has a preference setting for this which also works, I don't know.)

Guy Rowland wrote: Sep 27, 2024 4:07 amIn the meantime it might make sense to have an extra VST3 Kontakt folder with all the old versions in it, that is scanned only by VE Pro. That way all Cubase / Logic projects will always be up to date, but VE Pro will still function normally.
I finally got around to doing this on my Windows rig and it works like a charm. My oldest installed version of Kontakt is 5.

I put all my versions of Kontakt pre-K8 into it's own VE Pro specific folder - VST2 and VST3 side by side. I then opened VE Pro, added this new plugin folder, and scanned for changes. My VE Pro template loads exactly as before. In Cubase on older projects, it now produces a pop up to say "Kontakt Version Whatever is missing and has been replaced by Kontakt 8" - and everything works, newly updated. Marvelous!

One sliver of good news - VSL have said they are now working on Kontakt version migration for VE Pro:
Hi all! Yes, this is an important feature, and if everything goes smoothly, it will be implemented with one of the upcoming VE Pro updates! Thank you for your patience. 🙂

Yeah, great that they finally decided to do it. Wish Cockos would do that the same.
