RIP Jack DeJohnette

Very sad news. Jack DeJohnette passed away at age 82. One of the greatest jazz drummers ever and an outstanding musician.
There are so many timeless great albums where his playing had a significant impact that you can hardly count them. This is a great loss for the music world.

Here's the closing track, Spare Changes, from a little known but pretty good session with Laurent De Wilde (p, and also author of the best book on Thelonious Monk ever written)) and Ira Coleman (b) released as "Odd And Blue" (1989) on Gazebo Records.

One of the countless mind-blowing tracks from the Keith Jarrett Trio, with Gary Peacock (b) and DeJohnette (d), is their version of Poinciana. (A track from the album "Whisper Not", ECM (1999)).

And here are Jack DeJohnette (who, by the way, is also a great keyboard player), Danilo Perez (p) and John Patitucci (b) filmed during the recording sessions of "Music We Are":

This is on a record from one of my teachers- Harry Pepl from Austria- made with vibraphonist Werner Pirchner for the ECM label. Harry claimed Jack DeJohnette as one of the few drummers he really wanted to play with. The record might well fall under the category forgotten gems of jazz.
It is interesting that there was no bass player available they would accept.. So Jacks bass Drum somehow was the bass. And it's a good example how musical Jack can chime in even with musicians he didn't play all the time like with Keith.
