Worth it for a second computer, I would think.

(if I remember correctly, a license only works for one computer.)

Ah ha, amazingly they do now give you a 2nd license on request if you ask for one. I did and they had deposited it in the iLok account within an hour.

East West used to be the whipping boy of Sampledom, but credit where it's due - they've done wonders over the last decade to improve their reputation.

My few experiences with their support were totally excellent.
The 2nd license is news to me and quite welcome.

I bit.

Needs an awful lot of HD space, doesn’t it? Couldn’t even install just the strings (around 415 gig) on an HD that has 700 gig free space. (Probably the amount of free space required needs to be at least twice the size of the download.)

I’l be interested in your take.

For fun, try the mod wheel French Horn shorts. With mod wheel down all the way, a very crisp short. Middle, a nice portato, all the way up a sustain.

Not your cup of tea I’m sure, but nice for working quickly and an interesting approach.

I caved in, too, primarily for the Orchestrator, and I also got the Fantasy Orchestra.
My god, I'm in awe. I've been a very vocal critic of EW and Play in particular. But these new version are truly miraculous.
I don't want them for composing, but for playing live on a new 4 keyboard + full pedals setup (basically think organ, but optimized for orchestra instead of pipe organ stuff).
So it has everything an organ console would have, but also sustain pedal, and tons of other controllers. Very much work in progress, I might make a dedicated post about it.
Long story short, that EW stuff along with our own samples will become the backbone of it.I'm really, really impressed.

That's great to hear Tobias.

HOOPUS is a pretty rare beast. For instant playable gratification, for scoring 15 minutes a day on big orchestrated patches, it can't be beat. But it can also do the details, and there's some fantastic articulations in there. I'd been too snobby to try the Sordino button - pah, a mere emulation - until Jay made me look. Side by side, very close to VSL's dedicated duality Sordino library at the flick of a switch, so I saved myself £400.

I'd be very interested to read you thoughts as you get to grips with it more, and of course you too Piet. We can then move the thread to the Gear subforum when the promotion is over.

Fascinating, Tobias. What sort of live performance? Theater?

Please do, Tobias! In theatre we're always searching for a truly "playable orchestra" that responds well to live performance.

Still the best and most versatile complete orchestra, IMHO.

And Opus is more user friendly, if not as customizable, than Kontakt.

Well, I ended up jumping on this... I already have plenty of great orchestral instruments I seldom use (mainly Spitfire SO, Chamber, and BBC, along with everything in Komplete Ultimate CE), but after hearing such good things about HOOPUS for years I figured this was a good time to just add it to the drawer for some variety. It seems like it'll be a good complement to Spitfire, and probably fits more with my drier/studio default aesthetic a bit more.

I don't do nearly as much orchestral demo/mockup work as a lot of folks here or on VIC, but these top-tier string libraries are still such a joy to use, and I've found the Spitfire specimens to be extremely nice in a contemporary mix. I'll have fun with the EastWest alternatives in the near future, I think.

Progmeister, just in case, and I could be wrong about this - the current sale is for their Fantasy Orchestra, not HOOPUS.

Yup - pretty quick for FOOPUS to get to this position. I got the fantasy strings and voices for $50 apiece or something - strings are a unique flavour but not something you'd reach for every day in most cases.

Doubtless the $179 for HOOPUS will come around again soon enough.
