Re: IRCAM SPAT Revolution $99

It is. Mixing needs to happen pretty much within SPATRev. Levels should go out to it properly beforehand, and the mixing environment in SPAT itself is not really to my liking either, personally. And yes, stems can be an issue. I've even considered bouncing SPAT onto the track before deciding the who...

Re: Music editing apps

I could not agree more, Guy. Add to this that most (all?) don't allow for multi-tracks, and editing/splicing things becomes a major chore instead of the quick job in should be in the digital realm. I miss Bias Peak.

Re: When you first listen to a song, how important are lyrics to you?

there are times when a song has such a strong lyrical hook, fitting the melody just so, that I can't ignore it (say, Born In The USA) Funnily enough, Born In The USA was a song that came up in our chat. It's a curious one - the overwhelming sledgehammer feeling is of American might and patriotism. ...

Re: When you first listen to a song, how important are lyrics to you?

It's all about the music for my ears. I'm actually a little relieved to find that this is not so uncommon. Having said that, there are times when a song has such a strong lyrical hook, fitting the melody just so, that I can't ignore it (say, Born In The USA), or where the lyrics are using a schemes ...

Re: PanBox plug-in

Same here. Use it when it's the only plug that can do what I need. If it's about simply collapsing the stereo image a bit or panning a dry instrument, I'll use the built-in panner because of workflow and mindfulness of resources. I'm more partial to PanBox's Tonal Pan feature, with a little Smart Pa...

Re: Unique plugins

I think SPAT is the only thing in my plug-in collection that might rise to the standard of actual uniqueness. It's a pity it's basically abandonware at this point. You mean for the average composer or in general? I wasn't getting the sense of it being quite abandonware but I'm not one to keep up wi...

Re: Unique plugins

Sync issues as well, Luke. The communication between Logic and SPAT works well as long as I restrict myself to just one source, but as soon as I add a second source, I get that rattling fax-machine sound and constant sync errors in SPAT... Too bad, genuinely. I miss it. Thank you for just saving me...

Re: Unique plugins

Well, despite its age, SPAT remains breathtakingly unique. Haven’t come across anything yet that gets close to it, never mind equals it. Although I must add: I’ve had little or no success with SPAT Revolution so far. I’m sure it works well with some DAWS, but making friends with LogicPro doesn’t se...

Re: Unique plugins

Cool idea for a thread, Guy. Have not tried Torque. Actually, I barely knew of its existence before, so I'll be checking that out, thanks. I'll nominate STL Tones' ControlHub. It's a mixed bag when it comes to a channel strip, and the marketplace is a dubious affair, but what makes it worthwhile for...

Re: Orchestral Tools / Beaufort (Scoring Brass)

Very much like the tone and I can see it being useful for certain styles. However, I do hear that typical "samples-being-stitched-together" in some of the phrases in that trailer. Seems prevalent in the Trumpet Ensembles. Prior experience with their Big Band Horns library left a sour taste...

Nice, sounding pretty good. I'm still using (gasp!) Lounge Lizard for this duty but wasn't aware of the VReeds, so thanks for pointing that out, Piet. Not sure how I managed to miss that one, as I have lots of their others. Anyway, this sounds pretty good and it being modeling + samples vs samples-o...

Re: NI Summer of Sound 2024

Actually I think there IS a plan for that. Some hosts are now able to do this I believe - if, say, Kontakt 5 isn't installed but Kontakt 7 is, it will load with that. Hopefully someone here can post more on this, my knowledge is pretty sketchy. You are right. It's possible in Cubase, Nuendo, Logic ...

Re: Musical Sampling / The Upright

Thanks Piet , for the additional example illustrating the slides. Certainly here what you are saying; some of those landing notes should be softer. But as usual, with your musicality you manage to make the passage sound quite good enough despite the limitations and my brain is still fooled into &quo...

Re: Musical Sampling / The Upright

Like I mentioned earlier: the range of the instrument is deficient to the tune of almost one octave. I have quite a few other virtual basses and they all have almost an additional upper octave. Which is not nothing. And things aren’t helped by the fact that, to my ears, the highest notes of The Upr...

While I knew about these, I haven't actually had them under my fingertips; no Phaseplant here. But I'm amazed by how close they are. The Flute doesn't really work for me with its near-Clarinet timbre, while the other Winds get closer. Brass are the highlight, in particular I think the Horns sounds q...

Perhaps not as relevant of a metric, simply because it's about a Spitfire product? Having said that, I am liking the sound more and more.

Ah, that's too bad. I'm rooting for RX since it's my tool of choice, though I don't really do much dialogue editing (odd bits here and there). But for everything else, I do heavily rely on it. Thanks for the feedback, Guy. I think at this point I'll wait to upgrade.

$87 is quite good... super bizarre they wouldn't respond. Surely, they know that they're webstore has been offering bonkers upgrade prices for a while now? Re: Spitfire: Air Studios Reverb

I agree that a surround option would be nice. Paul wrote that they are looking into it. I also get the reluctance regarding Airs sound signature. It is a lot of ambience that you add with this reverb. Even just the tree mic has a lot of depth and ambience. I am experimenting with how to make this r...

Oh My. They actually did it.

I reckon the advent of Berlin Studio helped nudge everyone involved into this direction. Cool to have the option.

Blasphemy alert: I don't revere the sound of Air Lyndhurst as much as many others.

Thanks Guy. Was looking to get the 50% off on RX10 and then upgrade but I passed, despite having found the specs late last night.
